Specialization : Parasitology, Tropical Medicine, Immunology , Epidemiology and Environmental Health.

Research Achievements : Chowdhary has investigated host-parasite relationship, immune response in parasitic infections, their modalities, modulations and impact on clinical expression and drug action.Done pioneering studies on microchemical constituents of parasites and their functional significance.Studied population, biology and transmission dynamics of parasitic infections.Identified factors regulating natural abundance of parasitic pathogens. Arrested the development of human hookworms as adaptation to unfavourable external environment.

Positions : Director, Professor and Chairman, Department of Parasitology,School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta; Principal Investigator, Collaborative Research Programme with John Hopkins University, USA; Chairman, Center for study of man and environment.

MOGHE MAHADEO ATMARAM , POONA UNIVERSITY

Born 21st April, 1896, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh

Specialization : Zoology, Embroyology

Research Achievements : Mooghe contributed greatly to zoological research with taxonomy of helminth parasites, specially that of cestodes from vertebrates. He studied the development of kidney in teleostean fishes. He piloted an ICAR scheme for survey of the nature and incidence of helminth of infection in cattle,goats and sheep in the former Central Provinces and Berar and Central India.His other areas of interest were cytochemistry, histology and development of mammalian placenta and mammalian sex organs,chromosomes and spermatogenesis in homopterous and heteropterous insects; pineal eye in the garden lizard and post larval stages of brachiopod Crustacea. At National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Moghe initiated and developed studies on biological aspects of problems connected with sewage and fouling of water.

Positions : Registrar, Nagpur University and University of Poona (1951-53); Head, Department of Zoology, University of Poona (1955-57); Research Officer of Zoology, Birla College, Pilani; Professor, Graduate School, Nagpur University; Honorary Professor of Zoology,Institute of Science, Bombay; Emeritus Zoologist ,National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur.

THAPAR ,GOVIND SINGH , LUCKNOW UNIVERSITY

Specialization : Zoology, Helminthology

Research Achievements : Thapar did extensive work in helminthology. Discovered new helminths in many animals. Established a new classification of Acanthocephala ; studied diseases of domestic animals and discovered the parasites of hump-sore and nasal granuloma of cattle, while making a survey of parasitic infections of domestic animals in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa,Bengal and Assam

Positions : Professor of biology, Islamia College, Peshawar (1917-1918) and Canning College, Lucknow (1918-1922), Professor of Zoology, University of Lucknow (1922-1964).

Learned and Professional Societies : Fellow, Indian Academy of Sciences, Zoological Society of India and Helminthological Society of India, Member, Royal Microscopic Society (London).
